More than 180 Native American baseball players representing 30+ tribes gathered at Salt River Fields on July 19–20, 2025, for the inaugural Na7ive Na7ions National Tournament—and they were joined by a legend.

Former MLB star and 2001 World Series Game 7 hero Luis Gonzalez made a surprise appearance, walking the grounds, watching games, and inspiring players, families, and fans with his presence and words.

“This is such a special opportunity,” Gonzalez said. “At 13 to 16, these kids are learning leadership, dedication, and what it means to show up for each other. You can feel that here.”

The event, hosted by Na7ive Na7ions and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, was the first of its kind: an all-Native tournament created by and for Indigenous youth. The weekend featured sunrise blessings, vendor booths, and baseball under the lights, all with one goal in mind—building a future for Native American baseball players.

Gonzalez spoke candidly about growing up idolizing Pete Rose, collecting cards, and his path through the big leagues. But what stood out most was his message to players:

“Whatever your dream is—baseball, medicine, teaching—don’t let speed bumps stop you. This is your chance. Keep moving forward.”

His visit was more than a photo op—it was a powerful signal that Native talent belongs on the national stage.

As Na7ive Na7ions continues to create space for Native athletes in baseball and softball, Gonzalez’s presence marked a proud moment in our growing movement. This isn’t just about sports. It’s about sovereignty, pride, and opening doors for the next 7 generations.
